Florence, Italy Fall 2018

During my semester abroad in Florence, Italy (August to December 2018), I created these two looks below. Studying in Florence floored my expectations of what I originally thought was possible through fashion. It was such a special opportunity that I was fortunate enough to have experienced during my time at Kent State University.

The first look, a one-sleeve asymmetrical dress with an additional sleeve, was inspired by the Italian artistic movement of Futurism. Futurism centered on the dynamics of movement, drawing inspiration from speed, technology, and industry. The elastic gathering and asymmetry of the look is meant to replicate the abstract nature found within Futurist sculptures and paintings.

The second look, a leather jacket overlaid with rib-knit fabric, drew inspiration from outer space. The stark contrast of colors is in reference to planetary coloration and astronautical gear. Key utility details, such as metallic zippers and a detachable safety belt, keep the garment functional while referencing the style of NASA flight suits and spacesuits.
